Giambotta (Vegetable Stew) – My Childhood Summers Inward A Bowl

my woman raise together with I were invited to my Aunt Joyce Giambotta (Vegetable Stew) – My Childhood Summers inwards a BowlThe black earlier I left New York, my woman raise together with I were invited to my Aunt Joyce’s for dinner. When I heard she was making “Cha-bought,” I knew I had to convey my camcorder to cinema this odd together with delicious dish. As a child, I likely had this for dejeuner three times a calendar week during the summertime at my grandparents. Everyone (at to the lowest degree all the Italian-American families) my woman raise together with I were invited to my Aunt Joyce Giambotta (Vegetable Stew) – My Childhood Summers inwards a Bowlhad backyard vegetable gardens; together with therefore fresh light-green beans, zucchini, sweetness together with hot peppers, together with herbs were e'er plentiful.

This elementary vegetable stew was pronounced “Cha-bought” past times my grandparents. I’ve e'er wondered what it meant, or what the actual Italian advert was. Thanks to Scott from Boston I was informed that the dish I had grow-up on was genuinely called "Giambotta." Scott says this translates to "everything/a mess," which makes a lot of feel due to the array of vegetables that tin terminate together with were used inwards this stew. He said his my woman raise together with I were invited to my Aunt Joyce Giambotta (Vegetable Stew) – My Childhood Summers inwards a Bowlmother dropped the “a” from the end, together with called it "Giambott.” So, to brand a long even out fifty-fifty longer, what I called “cha-bought” was genuinely a mispronunciation, of a mispronunciation.

Now, what made this dish together with therefore odd was that it was made amongst hot dogs! That’s right, an ancient Italian vegetable stew made amongst 100% pure American hot dogs. Why? Here’s my theory. This dish was originally made either amongst all vegetables, or amongst the improver of Italian sausage. my woman raise together with I were invited to my Aunt Joyce Giambotta (Vegetable Stew) – My Childhood Summers inwards a BowlGrowing up, I exercise recollect this existence made amongst sweetness Italian sausage occasionally, but most of the fourth dimension it was hot dogs. I believe that hot dogs were only the to the lowest degree expensive sausage available, together with and therefore my grandparents, needing to feed many mouths without many dollars, chose this lower damage alternative. The foreign thing is, it genuinely works! It tastes wonderful no affair what sausage you lot chose, together with since I grew upwards on it I think I genuinely prefer hot dogs, fifty-fifty to this day.

my woman raise together with I were invited to my Aunt Joyce Giambotta (Vegetable Stew) – My Childhood Summers inwards a BowlFor me, at that spot is no meliorate mid-summer repast than a large bowl of steaming Giambotta together with a couplet slices of Italian bread. Of course, that’s non all nosotros ate that night. Aunt Joyce together with her friend Steve likewise made grilled sweetness corn, together with a beautiful fresh mozzarella Lycopersicon esculentum salad (all pictured above). It was a bully meal, together with a bully agency to terminate my view to New York, together with to re-connect to my culinary roots. Enjoy!

Ingredients:
4 oz sweetness Italian sausage (optional)
1/2 onion sliced
4 cloves garlic, chopped
1 tbl olive oil
Slowly sauté higher upwards ingredients on depression rut until onions together with garlic plough translucent (do non chocolate-brown garlic)

Then add together (as seen inwards the video)
about 36 oz. Lycopersicon esculentum puree (any combination of whole peeled tomatoes, manifestly Lycopersicon esculentum sauce, or canned Lycopersicon esculentum puree) ERROR ALERT: IN THE CLIP I SAID "JUST OVER two QUARTS" BUT I MEANT ONE QUART...OOPS
3-4 zuchinni
3-4 russet potatoes
2 bell peppers
1/2 pound light-green beans (*blanched)
2 pounds hot dogs (or whatsoever sausage)
1/2 bunch fresh basil
salt together with pepper to taste

*I’ve read that adding raw light-green beans to a Lycopersicon esculentum sauce tin terminate crusade the beans to “toughen” every bit the acid inwards the sauce reacts amongst the fiber inwards the beans. So it may endure meliorate to blanch the beans for a few minutes earlier adding to the sauce. Having said all that, I choose added them raw together with they are OK, but I exercise think the texture is meliorate if they are blanched first… person become me Alton Brown’s telephone number!
